Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Gofile: accounts, storage, sharing, security, API and billing.

Getting started

What is Gofile?

Gofile is a cloud storage and content distribution platform. You can upload files, organize them in a full-featured file manager, share them publicly or privately, and — with Premium — generate direct links for embedding and integrations.

What’s the fastest way to share a file?

Drop your files on the home page — no sign-up needed. A share link is created before the first byte is even uploaded, and you receive it (with a QR code) as soon as the upload completes.

For advanced options — folder structure, permissions, tags, imports, bulk actions — use the File Manager.

Accounts & login

Do I need an account?

No. A free guest account is created automatically on your first visit, so you can upload and share right away.

Adding an account with your email address (also free) lets you recover access from any device and keeps everything in one place. Premium accounts unlock permanent storage and advanced features.

How does login work?

Gofile is passwordless: enter your email address and we send you a secure login link. Clicking it signs you in — there is no password to remember or to leak.

You can attach several accounts to the same device and switch between them instantly from the sidebar.

Tip: if the login email doesn’t arrive, check your spam folder and make sure your mailbox accepts automated emails.

What is my account token / API token?

Your profile page shows your account token (masked by default). It authenticates API calls and some advanced tools — treat it like a password.

For guest accounts this token is the only way to recover the account, so keep it somewhere safe. If you reset it, the old token is invalidated immediately and any app or script using it must be updated.

Storage & retention

What does “ephemeral storage” mean?

Free accounts (guest and standard) use temporary storage designed for quick sharing.

Content is kept for 10 days of inactivity, and stays longer as long as it keeps being downloaded. Premium provides long-term storage designed for permanent access.

What is “cold storage”?

Instead of being deleted, content past its storage period may be moved to cold storage for preservation. Cold storage items aren’t directly downloadable until they are imported back into an account space.

Importing requires a Premium account.

Can I set an expiration date on my shared content?

Yes. A folder’s Access & permissions settings include an expiration date — once reached, the content is no longer accessible to visitors.

Why do file sizes on Gofile differ from what Windows shows?

Short answer: Gofile uses SI (decimal) units everywhere — 1 KB is exactly 1,000 bytes and 1 GB is exactly 1,000,000,000 bytes — while Windows divides by 1,024 and shows slightly smaller numbers for the same bytes.

Windows’ “1 GB” is actually 1,073,741,824 bytes; the correct label for that 1,024-based unit is GiB (gibibyte), as defined by the IEC standard. We use the SI gigabyte — the same unit as hard drive manufacturers, macOS and most cloud services — and, crucially, the same unit our plans, quotas and billing already use: a 3 TB plan is exactly 3,000,000,000,000 bytes, everywhere on Gofile.

So if a file looks bigger on Gofile than in Windows Explorer, nothing grew — it’s the same bytes measured with a decimal ruler instead of a binary one.

Practical example: a file of exactly 1,000,000,000 bytes shows as 1.0 GB on Gofile, macOS and other SI-based services, and as 0.93 GB in Windows. Same bytes — different ruler.

Traffic & limits

Do you have bandwidth or traffic limits?

We never throttle bandwidth: uploads and downloads run at maximum speed for all users.

Accounts do have a monthly traffic allowance (see the Premium page for current numbers), and you can check your usage at any time on your profile page.

Important note for free accounts: free traffic may be counted by IP address. On a shared IP (school, office, VPN), other people’s downloads on the same IP can count toward the usage you see.

What happens when I exceed my traffic limit?

Some download functionality can be temporarily restricted until your traffic usage falls back under the limit. Upgrading to Premium raises the allowance.

Why do I see “Too many requests” (429)?

For security and platform stability, some endpoints are rate-limited. If limits are repeatedly exceeded, the originating IP address may be temporarily blocked.

If you have a legitimate high-volume use case, contact support to discuss options.

Sharing & direct links

What’s the difference between a download page link and a direct link?

A download page link opens a Gofile page where visitors can browse the folder, read its description, preview media and download what they need.

A direct link (Premium) serves the content immediately, without the page UI — useful for embedding and integrations — and supports extra restrictions.

How can I secure a shared folder or direct link?
  • Public/private visibility per folder
  • Password protection
  • Expiration dates
  • IP allow-lists and domain allow/block rules on direct links
  • Optional basic authentication on direct links

Security & privacy

What data do you collect?

We aim to collect only what is needed to operate the service. When you add an account, we store your email address; when you purchase Premium, billing-related information is collected to process payments and generate invoices.

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

Is my content encrypted?

Yes — your content is encrypted on our servers.

Gofile is not end-to-end encrypted, though: that would make server-side features like previews, ZIP downloads and search impossible.

If you need maximum confidentiality, encrypt your files locally before uploading — for example with 7-Zip.

What happens if content violates the Terms?

Content that violates our Terms of Service may be removed, and accounts may be restricted.

To report abusive content, use the Report abuse button on the content’s own page — it attaches the content automatically — or see our Abuse Policy.

Where is Gofile hosted?

Our two main storage datacenters are located in Paris and Phoenix.

To keep transfers fast worldwide, we also operate upload/download proxy locations: Paris, Phoenix, New York City, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney and São Paulo.

You can pick your upload proxy in your profile preferences — running the speed test helps you choose the best one.

API & developers

Where is the API documentation?

You’ll find it on the API page. The API is in BETA and can evolve.

Does the API require Premium?

Most endpoints require a Premium account. Basic operations — uploading and basic content management — are available to free accounts.

Are there API rate limits?

Yes, per endpoint — exceeding them returns HTTP 429 responses. For large integrations or higher limits, contact support.

Premium & billing

Is Gofile free?

Yes. The free tier is designed for quick sharing, and Premium covers permanent storage, higher limits and advanced features.

See the Premium page for current plans, pricing and allowances.

What’s the difference between Subscription and Pay-as-you-go?

A subscription is a fixed monthly plan with defined storage and traffic allowances. Pay-as-you-go is credit-based and designed for flexible or high-volume usage.

Pay-as-you-go includes a minimum monthly usage — check the Premium page for details.

Can I get invoices or billing help?

Yes — for billing questions or invoice support, reach us via the contact page. Payments are processed by our Merchant of Record (Number X Europe OÜ), which may appear on your bank statement.

Desktop app

Do you have a desktop app?

Yes — an alpha desktop app exists, currently intended for Premium accounts. It is still experimental, so we don’t officially advertise it yet; availability and distribution may evolve as it matures.

For synchronization today, rclone has an official Gofile implementation.

Troubleshooting

My uploads or downloads are slow — what can I do?

Downloads should generally be fast. If they aren’t, the cause is usually your network (ISP, VPN, corporate firewall) or temporary server load.

Upload speed depends heavily on your distance to the selected upload proxy — pick the closest one in your profile preferences; the speed test can help you choose.

If uploads are slow, we recommend Chrome or Edge: in some setups Firefox can have major upload speed issues. For very large uploads, prefer a stable wired connection — and if possible, try another network (some VPNs and corporate networks throttle uploads).
